How to Know God
We often think that ‘eternal life’ means what happens after we die. Christ actually redefined the meaning. “Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.” (John 17:3)
Eternal life actually begins here on earth. The word ‘belief’ has become so widely used that the meaning has actually eroded. Many people believe intellectually that there is a God, and even go so far as to believe that Jesus Christ died and came back from the dead. But God asks for more.
Knowing anyone involves an exchange – they know you, you know them. Since God created us, he already knows us. “You have searched me, Lord, and you know me.” (Psalm 139:1) The question is: do you know God? The answer is eternally important.
How does a person get to know God? Through the exchange of your old life for his new one. Christ died so that our past – with all of our mistakes, failures, and sins – could be forgiven. But that’s not all. Christ came back from the dead to prove that he had the power to work actively in our lives.
What does that mean? This is where the exchange happens. We turn in our past (our old life) and Christ offers us a new one. “If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” (2 Corinthians 5:17) And he does this by a very real experience of a second birth, a spiritual birth.
“Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God – children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.” (John 1:12)
The key to knowing God is exchanging your old life for his new one. He gets your heart, you get his. Christ’s death and resurrection were a gift that allows for the exchange. Our part is to turn in the old life and accept Christ into our hearts for the new life.
It is possible to know a lot of facts about God. But do you know him? The ask is simple … the commitment is lifelong. God knows you – everything about you. Perhaps it’s time that you know him. Exchange your life – it will change your life.
